For a proprietary material, put down the trade name and the hazardous ingredients. If there are a few products with the same general properties these can be grouped together i.e. different trade names but very similar ingredients. You can focus the assessment on a process if preferred. Ensure that the harmful effects of all the hazardous substances involved are described and that the precautions are adequate with regard to all of them. A description of the work process during which the hazardous substance/s are used. Hazard information: Put down the harmful properties of the substance in as much detail as seems sensible. This can be obtained from the container but you can also attach the suppliers data sheet. You should put down the exposure limit only if there is airborne contamination (vapour, gas or dust). Ref HSE EH 40 consult Operational Risk and Environmental Sustainability (OR&ES) for details if required. How exposure occurs Describe how the work activity gives rise to exposure e.g. if the substance is poured or decanted from one container to another allowing vapour to escape; the route of exposure (inhalation, skin contact, ingestion, puncture wound). You should state the quantities and frequency of use and what precautions are already applied. Essentially you need as much information as required for you to be able to decide whether the work process is being done safely or whether better precautions are required. Degree of risk Low Med HighCombine the possible harmful effects with the likelihood that they might occur to draw your conclusion. Also, you may need to take into account any known health conditions of the staff e.g. is there a pregnant worker, does any one suffer from asthma which may be aggravated, does any one have dermatitis? Precautions to be taken: Describe the control measures needed whether already in force or not. You should include procedural precautions as well as equipment. If you have rated the risk as med or high there should always be an attempt to improve the control of the risk. Note any need for maintenance or health surveillance. Remember: this is a risk assessment of work activities; hazard warnings and precautions will not suffice alone. The detail required depends on the degree of risk. Apply common sense but get the relevant facts first. If in doubt contact OR&ES.
